Join us for a unique storytelling evening, part of the KUPU Māori Writers Festival 2024, where food, culture, and creativity blend in a celebration of culinary narratives.
Featuring award-winning cookbook author and photographer Christall Lowe, and Jane Rangiwahia, an accomplished author, food writer, and TV Food Producer.
Together, they will weave together an extraordinary evening of kai and kōrero, creating a feast of stories and dishes that go far beyond the plate. Kawakawa lemonade, rēwena bread made with an heirloom "bug", smoked fish pate, goats cheese feta whip, kūmara cake and 100’s and 1000’s cup cakes are just a sample of the delights that will be shared with guests in this unforgettable evening - an inspiring fusion of words and flavours.
Complimentary glass of wine on arrival, and whakapūharu (nibbles) and book signings at the conclusion of the event.
Christall Lowe (Ngāti Kauwhata, Tainui, Ngāti Maniapoto) is not just an award-winning author and food photographer—she is a master of weaving stories that resonate deeply. Her acclaimed cookbook Kai – Food Stories and Recipes from My Family Table was awarded Best First Book at the 2023 Ockham NZ Book Awards. Christall’s upcoming work, Kai Feast – Food Stories and Recipes from the Maunga to the Moana (October 2024), promises to further enrich our understanding of kai and manaakitanga.
Jane Rangiwahia (Taranaki, Ngāti Ruanui) brings her own unique flavor to the evening "as an author, food writer and TV Food Producer from Hāwera”, Jane’s culinary journey began in her family kitchen, helping her Mum from an early age. From her impactful work on TV shows to her bestselling book Kai and Kindness, co-authored with her brother Paul, Jane is dedicated to promoting health and wellbeing through food and storytelling.
Adding a poetic touch, and to compliment the evening, renowned poet Te Kahu Rolleston will captivate the audience with a special performance, weaving together the themes of food, culture, and storytelling.
